Zion Lands On Teesside

Teesside Lions are thrilled to announce the signing of explosive young guard Zion Lawson, who joins the club from the highly respected Charnwood College Riders programme. The 18-year-old becomes the third player to join the Lions through Teesside University, reinforcing the growing bond between the university and the National League outfit.

As the club embarks on another season, the recruitment of Lawson highlights the Lions’ commitment to blending elite-level potential with character, culture and long-term development.

Zion Lawson brings a dynamic, high-tempo game with him to Teesside. Known for his explosiveness in transition, on-ball defensive intensity, and willingness to do the hard work on both ends of the floor, Lawson fits perfectly into the club’s plan for a positive, physical, fast-paced style of play.

Lions’ James Thomson, who is also Head Coach of Teesside University is ecstatic to have Zion join the club and spoke about how important the direction of the club is.

“Serge and I have held multiple conversations regarding how we want to position the club. Often the desire for instant impact can be counter intuitive. Last season exposed some fragilities, and we have worked hard to solve this. Zion was the first player we identified, and to add him to Sheja and Benas provides us with three high level athletes to not only play for the men’s National League team and BUCS, but crucially to be positive role models within the Community.”

During his time at Charnwood, Lawson developed under some of the country’s most respected junior coaches, competing in the EABL (Elite Academy Basketball League) and gaining valuable experience in high-pressure matchups against top-tier academy talent. His performances with Charnwood earned him attention from programmes across the country.

Lawson is widely regarded as a leader-by-example, calm under pressure and consistently focused on team-first play. His ability to guard multiple positions, combined with a perimeter shot and a fearless approach to attacking the basket, makes him one of the most promising young guards in the UK.

This signing also carries a personal significance for Lions Head Coach Serge Bojev, who coached Zion during his formative years with Portsmouth Force at the U14 level, and promotion with U16s on the South Coast.

“Zion was already showing signs of something special when we worked together at Portsmouth,” Bojev said. “He was raw but fearless, and even back then, he had a mature attitude. Fast forward several years, and he’s developed into a smart, committed player with tremendous upside. To see him back under my guidance, now at this level, is something I’m really happy about.”

Zion’s arrival continues the growing pipeline between Teesside Lions and Teesside University, a partnership that allows high-potential student athletes to combine academic study with elite-level basketball. Lawson becomes the third player to join the Lions under this vision, as the club builds a culture of education, excellence and opportunity.

“We’re really proud of the partnership we’ve built with Teesside University,” added Thomson. “It allows us to support players on and off the court, and Zion is a perfect example of someone who will benefit from that dual pathway. He’ll grow as a player and as a person, helping us compete both in BUCS and a tough National League season.”

Zion comes from a strong sporting pedigree, and speaking on his new challenge, said:

“I’m excited to join Teesside Lions. From the moment I met Coach James and Coach Serge, their passion and dedication were undeniable, inspiring me to push my basketball and academic aspirations to new heights.”

“The energy around the club is amazing, and with Coach Bojev it feels like a full-circle moment. I want to work hard, play my role, and help the team establish itself on the UK sports map. The opportunity to study at Teesside University at the same time makes it even better. It feels like the right place for me to grow.

“By the end of my visit, it was clear. I can’t wait to be part of the Teesside story. Let’s Go Lions!”

As Teesside Lions prepare for their fifth season in NBL, the signing of Zion Lawson adds depth, energy and versatility to the backcourt. With more signings expected over the coming weeks, the Lions are making a clear statement: they are not just here to compete, but to build a programme that will thrive at the highest level, with a long term vision.

Zion’s father, who visited Teesside University with his wife and their children earlier in the year was pleased with what he saw, adding:

“I am pleased that Zion has taken the bold step to further his education, and pursue his passion for basketball with Teesside University, and the Teesside Lions. Teesside is renowned for its unparalleled sports science programme in the North East, and this will provide a great learning environment in addition to playing for Teesside Lions; a basketball club that has created an exceptional reputation for development of players.

“I believe Zion is fortunate to have a familiar Coach, a great University and a basketball opportunity to pursue his journey for success.”

Supporters will have their first chance to meet Zion at the club’s Pre Season Party this Saturday 6pm at Teesside University. Tickets are only £3 and available via the club shop at TeessideLions.com
